Saying good buy to Vidal Sassoon

Hearing that Vidal Sassoon died last week, sent a funny feeling through me as as I reminisced about this famous hairdresser who had now departed us. It was like when you hear an old record and it takes you back to a certain time in your life well, this was the same for me. I remembered when I started hairdressing college and I bought this amazing book ( which I still have ) and it took me back to that time and that place. Sassoon certainly was an icon and inspired many, many hairdressers around the world and changed the way hairdressers worked back in the 60′s and referring to hair as being like “fabric” ! Of course he was famous for cutting Mary Quant’s hair and he then went on to reach international fame when he cut Mia Farrow’s hair for the film “Rosemary’s baby”.

Not only did Sassoon open many salons, launch his own brand of products, but he also established his own teaching academies to teach stylists to perfect his techniques. These academies, whilst in more recent times were sold off, they still hold his name today and have a very strong influential presence in the hairdressing and fashion industry. It was only last year that I attended one of these amazing courses my self in the heart of London.

So, we must say “thank you” and “good buy” to the man that changed the world with his scissors and kept his influence strong to the very end!

Working along side Paul Fletcher wedding photographer last Friday was a really nice experience for me as a hair and make-up artist. What I notice about Paul is that not only is he incredibly professional at what he does but he seems very relaxed, calm and friendly and it wasn’t surprising that Sarah and Tom should choose him for their special day!

Had a great lunch with Christina today ( one of the other wedding hair and make-up artists that work with Claire Wallace Hairdressing ) and we were throwing some ideas around re doing some training for vintage themed hair and make-up. This we thought would be for either other professionals or people just wanting to gain some knowledge and understanding of how to do Vintage themed looks. These styles are definitely very “in” at the moment with many clients drawing inspiration in some shape or form and using those ideas in full, or in part for their wedding theme. Personally I absolutely love vintage so the more the merrier as far as I’m concerned!

Wedding hair at Goodwood Hotel.

Having completed the vintage themed wedding hair for Caroline (and also doing the hair for her sister and 2 bridesmaids ) at Goodwood Hotel yesterday, it was so lovely to receive an immediate thank you from her this evening, saying that she has never had so many people complement her. Caroline also sent me a link to a short video of her getting ready and the actual service which took part at Goodwood House, which is such an amazing venue. I must admit, she looked so incredible that it really brought tears to my eyes! I have of course asked for some pictures and when I get them, I will post for all to see!

Working with Lesley to day at Pelham House ( she did the wedding hair and I did all the make-up ) on Sarah’s wedding party, was another very successful morning.
When you are working with a party of people, obviously you are working with different ages which means you need to adapt the make-up accordingly. One of the comments that is always made to me, is that my clients are always amazed at how good their skin looks. I think when you have been specifically trained to do wedding make-up, it can be quite a different finish to evening, day, or other, which really does make it a specialised thing. The make-up needs to be light, radiant and have a flawless finish. Personally, one of my favorite things when doing any wedding make-up is to accentuate and focus on the eye brows. Eye brows on any clients can create a youthful appearance simply by drawing them in, creating a nicely shaped arch, increasing the space and in my opinion, is one of the key elements to a well balanced make-up.
So ladies, don’t neglect those brows and start developing your technique.

Wedding at South lodge Hotel.

So here we were, really getting in to the swing of the wedding season now and Working on Liz’s wedding at South lodge on Sunday, was a really nice opportunity to work with some of the other hair and make-up artists connected to Claire Wallace Hairdressing. As it was such a large party booking, myself, Carla, Zara and Yasmin (my daughter who assisted me ) worked on hair and make-up to ensure Liz’s day ran smoothly. As Liz lived in Saudi, It was quite a feat to arrange every thing from a different part of the world and between my self and the girls, we completed all the hair and make-up in good time. Liz looked absolutely stunning!
Liz wanted my self and Yasmin to stay on after the wedding to adjust her hair and make-up and offered us afternoon tea whilst we were waiting! What a treat!!
So, another happy bride and thanks to the girls at making the morning run so well.

Wedding at the Globe Theatre London.

I was already booked on this particular date when the wedding enquiry at the Globe Theatre London came in. How ever, i was happy to be able to book Camilla to do the brides wedding hair instead of me. What an amazing location to get married though! I must say I was just a little bit jealous not being involved in this one ha ha! I do hope there will be another opportunity!

Had a great meeting with Jo on Friday last, regarding us linking up businesses. Jo has a nail bar business in London and part of their focus is doing nails for brides. Jo wants to recommend a hair and make-up artist to link up with her girls as part of a dual service, but also now in the Sussex area. They also have a brand of nail varnishes that apparently don’t contain chemicals, Sounds good to me! So ladies, any one interested in having their nails done for their wedding ( or any other special occasion ) please do let me know.

Working locally in Brighton on Friday was actually really nice change as It’s quite normal for me to be doing weddings and in some country location.
Doing Vicki and her 2 bridesmaids hair and make-up went really well and they all looked lovely by the time I was finished. All the ladies had MAC make-up to create their finished looks and the hair styles were young and contemporary.
Another good job done and I couldn’t be happier when I know they all felt great!

I’m really excited and looking forward to the 2 master classes that I have now booked with the MAC pro team in London. The first is “Creating Perfect Skin” where the Senior Artist Pablo Rodreguez reviews techniques for making the skin look perfect and demonstrates correction on blemishes, skin discoloration and under eye darkness. His work has appeared in Elle and Harper’s Bazaar.
The second is a bridal work shop, exploring trends, techniques and long wear secrets, allowing us to create a theme and personal palette for the bride and her party. It all sounds very exciting!
